Asus P5Q and EVGA 8600 GT BIOS Update Issue
Another quick one….. If you own an Asus P5Q3 Deluxe Wifi/AP and an EVGA 8600GT, you may want to reconsider updating to the latest 1103 BIOS released on July 14th. Basically after updating the BIOS, you can no longer get the system to post. If you have an alternate card, you can use that to get a display again and revert the system back to an older BIOS. You may not be able to ‘reverse’ the update, by flashing to an older BIOS, through the Asus EZFlash utility in the BIOS. In this case, download the BIOS utility, Afudos, from from the motherboard download page for your motherboard. One note, when you use Afudos, make sure that you type in the BIOS ROM name right after the ‘i’ without spaces. So the command to update the BIOS is “afudos /i<ROM filename>”.
I’ve also seen this issue with other P5Q series and the most recent BIOSes for these boards. Don’t know if it’s due to the board or the firmware of the video card but I’ve sent off a message to Asus and havn’t heard back yet. If they reply back, I’ll update this post.
If anyone else has seen this problem with other brands of 8600GT’s, or any other video card, please share, and leave a comment!

Same problem here with a P5QL PRO and a EVGA 8600GT - the BIOS fails to pick it up. BIOS version 0414.

I ordered the Asus P5Q and the eVGA e-GeForce 8600GT from Newegg.com I ordered the video card mainly because it was on sale and I’m not a big gamer.
Big Mistake.
I tried everything… different PCI x16 slots, using the other DVI connection. Finally I found an old PCI video card and got it to boot. Figured i would upgrade the BIOS. No help. Something ended up happening to my mobo and I had to RMA it. Now, I will be purchasing a new video card (one that I know works). More than likely it will be the ASUS Radeon HD 4850. A lot more money, but I believe it will be worth it in the end. I know this card is compatible from reading all the positive reviews on Newegg.

This clarifies the problem I was having. I was wondering what I should start RMAing first.
This type of stuff has been going on for decades, you’d think they’d have figured it out by now.

@electrorocket
I plan on trying the bios version provided on my driver CD, at times this is even the ‘pre-retail’ version of the bios, so it can cause problems. Then again, I might just skip all that and trade cards with someone while I’m using the 8600.
The 9500GT is faster, to anyone looking for a same price range alternative. The 8800GT is even faster than that, and it’s hitting 110 after rebates. Go for that instead of the 8600, trust me, the extra 50 dollars is way worth it.

I bought a KAF2 Geforce 9600Gt OC 512MB PCIE W/Dual Link DVI in August. It worked great with my Biostar motherboard. the biostar died and went RMA and I bought the Asus P5Q. It will not boot with the video card. I get bios beeps 1 long 3 short, saying memory error. Memory is new G.Skill 1g that has passed Memtest. I’ve tried a stick of Kingston 2g that has pased memtest, same result. Board came with the 0703 bios, I flashed to the newest, the 1406. No change.
Please let me know if Asus gives you a workaroumd or something. Thanks.
